Hi and welcome to DanceClassesWellington.com.  I am a Wellington based dancer who currently dances competitive ballroom, but I’ve also done Ceroc, Rock and Roll, Zumba, ballet, jazz and sequence dancing (though not all at the same time!).  One thing I find as a dancer is that I couldn’t find the information on where to dance in this town. Wellington has one of New Zealand’s most dynamic dance scenes – but it is fragmented and different styles and even different age groups only share their information about upcoming events and classes within their own small communities. Few of the dance community’s leaders have taken the step online – but most of their actual and potential students are active online. So I see a need for a one stop shop for information about dancing in  New Zealand’s capital city.

If you are a beginner and looking for a dance class the first thing you should do is to try a few out. Often studios will offer either a free first class, or an open day (or evening) early in the year when many people decide to give dancing a go. For many people dancing is not just a form of exercise and artistic expression – but is also a great way to meet people and make new contacts – particularly if you are new to town. Hey – even Wellington’s Mayor says dancing is good!

To find a dance studio in the style of dance you are interested in – check out my Wellington Dance Studios listings. If you can already dance then check out the Regular Wellington Dances page.

Although the lighting seems to have improved – with new lights over the stage and an attractive stage design – this venue still struggles to be big enough to hold a dance competition in. I know overseas there are [...] Read more »

Other people celebrate Easter by eating too much, or maybe going to the batch or even staying home and doing nothing. New Zealand danceport competitors dance all weekend instead – thanks to the long-running double competition put on at Easter in Nelson’s Trafalgar Centre. Wellington Out Games 2011: Dance Competition Review

Donald and Alex competing at Wellington 2011 Out Games

The Wellington Town Hall was the classy location for the Wellington Out Games Dancesport Competition last Sunday. It always seems a shame to me that so many of our local competitions are held in what are, frankly, pretty tired old halls which don’t really fit with the spectacle that is Ballroom Dancing – men in [...] Read more »
